Pelvic instability during pregnancy

During pregnancy hormones change and influence the elasticity of the ligaments, the pelvic ligaments are stretched around the 20th week of pregnancy and in some cases the ligaments can be stretched beyond the usual degree, this can lead to instability of the pelvic girdle which can affect the birth. Pain is usually felt low down over the symphyseal joint, it can also be felt in the hips, groin and lower abdominal and can radiate down the inner thighs.

SYMPTOMS

  • Difficulty lifting leg
  • Inability to transfer weight through pelvis and legs
  • Pain in hips or restriction of hip movement
  • Present swelling or inflammation over joint
  • Can be associated with bladder or bowel dysfunction
  • Struggle to sit or stand
  • Audible clicking sound coming from the pelvis
  • Waddling or shuffling gait
  • Pain pulling legs apart

CAUSES

  • The pelvic joints moving unevenly
  • A change in the activity of the muscles in the pelvis, hip, abdomen, back and pelvic floor
  • A history of pelvic trauma
  • The position of the baby altering the loading stresses on the pelvic ligaments and joints
  • Strenuous work
