Clenching or grinding teeth, dry needling is very affective

Although teeth grinding can be caused by stress and anxiety, it often occurs during sleep and is more likely caused by sleep apnea, an abnormal bite or missing or crooked teeth.

Surfcoast massage Torquay and Jan Juc treats a lot of people who are unaware that they are clenching or grinding because this often occurs during sleep. A dull constant headache or sore jaw when you wake up is a tell tale symptom. Most people discover that they are doing this when there loved ones hear them grinding of a night.

Dry needling and massage is a very effective method for treating the muscles in the jaw and working the muscles in the neck which connect to the base of the skull. This is where the headaches are coming from.

Causes:

  • Stress
  • Foods and drink that contain caffeine, such as coke cola, chocolate and coffee.
  • Avoid alcohol, grinding tends to intensify after alcohol consumption
  • Avoid chewing gum as this allows your jaw muscles to get used to clenching and you are more likely to grind teeth.
  • If  a sleep disorder is causing the grinding (sleep apnea) treating it may reduce or eliminate the grinding
  • Anxiety

Treatment

Dry needling and massage will help reduce the tension in the muscles of the jaw and neck and once this releases the grinding can reduce. Surfcoast Massage Torquay and Jan Juc are fully qualified in this practice.
