If you’ve had a single or double mastectomy as a result of having breast cancer, your post-operative treatment should include lymphatic drainage performed by a trained professional. It’s important you have finished your other cancer treatments (chemotherapy/radiation) and had the OK by your Oncologist, but once you are at this stage you want to ensure your body can effectively drain fluid.

The lymphatic system is like a system of highways throughout the body and once cancer enters this system, it’s difficult to find exactly where it is. Some or all your lymph nodes would be taken out of an area of your body. Often they take out some to test for cancer, but even if these nodes are cancer-free, they can not be put them back. Once the lymph nodes or lymphatic system is compromised it can become confused causing fluid retention to start in the upper and then lower part of the limb. Tingling, puffiness or heaviness is one way to identify that the lymph system is not working correctly and if no treatment is administered after treatment the limb can become permanently bigger than the other limb and compression stockings are also going to be a permanent part of your dress wear. Lymphatic drainage can help in the early stages to reverse permanent damage redirecting the fluid to other areas that are working efficiently. If left the fluid retention builds up and is irreversible, pitting is the first sign of permanent damage and lymphatic drainage can help stablise the limb so that it doesn’t get any worse.
